Wassman was born in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. In 1996, he started working with fellow bandmembers and bassist Brett Bollinger and Yesod Williams. The three of them have been friends since high school and started the band shortly after graduating. Kaleo said in an interview, "Everyone went to college and we went to the bars...{laughing}."
Kaleo: I remember how passionate the kids were watching us, very welcoming and friendly just having a really good time. And the rest of my band almost not making it back alive do to the caprihinas.
M&S: A lot of fans from Brazil can't go to SWU and are waiting you in brazil again. When Pepper will be comeback?
M&S: Bret said to M&S Música & Surfe that the album will be the energy of a Pepper live performance, you can give more details about this new album?
Kaleo: The new album is something me and the boys have been waiting to record for years. The songs are right, the feel is right, and the timing is right. I just feel so grateful to be doing what we are doing.
M&S: Any expectate for release a new Pepper DVD Live?
Kaleo: There will be a knew DVD documenting Pepper's "End Of The World Party" in Kona on 12/21/12. We figure that if the world does end why not have all of are friends around the world meet us there? Not a bad place to watch the world slip away, right? And if the world doesn't end, at least the next day you'll have a DVD to see how you party like it was the end of the world!
M&S: It's almost ten years since Pepper presents Arena Productios Aftaparty? Any expect for new reunion...?
Kaleo: Those guys our are friends for life, we see each other a few times a year and its always like we never left each other. Wow, 10 years huh. I think a reunion is a great idea, I'll talk to the boys.
M&S: What inspires Pepper songs?
Kaleo: I think all the songs we write come from life experiences and imagination. What i think is that if a song inspires you, it was made for you. No matter who wrote its in your life at the time you needed it. Were here to serve.
M&S: The new version of Ho's that you played in John Lennon Bus is Great! There's any possibilities about you record old songs with a new version for the new album?
Kaleo: Interesting enough, there are a mix of old songs never recorded from Kona Town and No Shame that we have had for years and some new songs we have worked out.
M&S: I see your interview for Seavoices... What you think about FIRN.life amd ocean wareness?
Kaleo: The Ocean is my home, in the truest sense. There is no place i would rather be. So I think about this, all the pleasure, and smiles she gives to me free. I feel that I need to protect her as much as I possibly can from the damage we all do. Both unconsciously and consciously. Sea voices and F.I.R.N our two of my favorite nature awareness alias.
M&S: What are you thinking about the performance of the hawaians on ASP World Tour?
Kaleo: I think the talent is solid. The chicks our ruling it! Hawaii hopes for John John.
M&S: Do you have any brazilian surfer that like?
Kaleo: A lot, hard question cause theres so much... Mario Bracão, Gabriel Medina, Maya Gabeira. Charges brah!
M&S: When John Frusciante left Red Hot Chili Peppers I was afraid about they contact you to be their new guitarrist and you get out Pepper... Did you received any contact? What you think about this new Chili Peppers Record?
Kaleo: Red Hot Chili Peppers is one of my all time Fav's. John Frusciante is an amazing, beautiful, tone rich guitar player... I have learned a lot from his playing and style.. No matter what happens to them im just happy they shared what the needed to. And no, I did not get the call for that job, But I think they just lost my number.
M&S: How was play this end of Year with Sublime With Rome in Hawaii? BTW what you think about their first record "Yours Truly"?
Kaleo: It was fun to play with a band you love listing to. Just amazing to be in Hawaii and have such a good line up with them and Iration... And, unfortunately I haven't been able to dive into there new album yet do to the fact of being so busy with Pepper and Sabotage Soundsystem, But I'm sure I'll get a chance one of these days and most likely love it... Rome is a great guy and very talented and of course Eric and Bud are such a power house rhythm section.
M&S: Are you fan of The Beautiful Girls ?
M&S: I read on one that you interviews that you like soccer... Do you have any brazilian favorite players... What's your team?
Kaleo: Yup. Huge Football fan. I don't call it soccer. And brazil has some of my All time favs!! As of right now Pato is the fucking man and plays for my club team AC Millan.
M&S: When Pepper will make a romantic song?
Kaleo: Maybe the next record? But I doubt it.

M&S: Sobre rápida visita ao Brasil durante o o SWU ... há algo de especial que você se lembra?
Kaleo: Eu me lembro o quanto apaixonado o público estava nos observando, muito acolhedor e amigável e também se divertindo. E o resto da minha banda quase não ficou vivo por que eles estavam bebendo muitas caipirinhas.
M&S: Muitos fãs do Brasil não puderam ir ao SWU e estão esperando você no Brasil novamente. Quando o Pepper estará de volta?
Kaleo: Estaremos em turnê Brasil a partir de agora para o resto de nossas vidas. Os passeios que faremos de agora em diante vão abranger todo o globo e estamos animado para ver o Rio.
M&S: Bret disse ao M&S Música & surfe que o novo álbum terá a energia de um show ao vivo da banda. Você pode dar mais detalhes sobre este novo álbum?
Kaleo: O novo álbum é algo que eu, Bret e Yesod estávamos esperando para gravar durante anos. As músicas estão bem, a sensação está muito boa, e o timing está perfeito. Eu me sinto muito grato por estar fazendo o que estamos fazendo.
M&S: Alguma expectativa para o lançamento de um novo DVD da banda?
Kaleo: Haverá um DVD documentando Pepper no "End Of The World Party" em Kona no dia 21 de Dezembro de 2012. Nós pensamos que se o mundo acabar por que não ter todos os seus amigos de todo o mundo reunidos para nos encontrar lá? Não é um mau lugar para ver o mundo acabar, certo? E se o mundo não acaba, pelo menos no dia seguinte você vai ter um DVD para ver como você foi a "End Of The World Party"(Festa do Dim do Mundo) !
M&S: São quase 10 anos desde que Pepper apresentou o álbum "Aftaparty" da Arena Productios? Alguma possibilidade de uma nova reunião da Arena Productions...?
Kaleo: Esses caras são nossos amigos para a vida, nos vemos algumas vezes por ano e é sempre como se nunca tivéssemos ficado tanto tempo longe. Wow...10 anos hein, eu acho que uma reunião é uma ótima idéia, vou falar com eles.
M&S: O que inspira as canções da banda?
Kaleo: Eu acho que todas as músicas que escrevemos vêm de experiências de vida e da imaginação. O que eu acho é que se uma canção que te inspira, Ela foi feita para você. Não importa quem escreveu, ela esteve na sua vida no momento em que você precisou dela. Estava aqui para servir.
M&S: A nova versão do Ho's que vocês tocaram para John Lennon Bus é ótima! Há alguma chance dessas músicas que vocês já gravaram, virem com uma nova versão para o novo álbum?
Kaleo: Interessante isso, pois também há várias músicas antigas nunca gravadas de Kona Town e de No Shame que temos há anos também algumas músicas novas.
M&S: Eu vi sua entrevista para Seavoices ... O que você pensa sobre FIRN.life e a proteção dos oceanos?
Kaleo: O oceano é minha casa, no sentido mais verdadeiro. Não há lugar que eu preferia estar. Então eu penso sobre isso, Todo o prazer, e os sorrisos, que ele me dá de graça. Eu sinto que eu preciso protegê-lo o máximo dos danos que todos nós fazemos. Seja inconscientemente ou conscientemente. Seavocies e F.I.R.N.life são os meus dois favoritos na consciência da preservação da natureza.
M&S: O que você está achando do desempenho dos havaianos no ASP World Tour?
Kaleo: Eu acho que o talento é sólido,,, As garotas estão arrasando! O Hawaii tem esperanças em John John.
M&S: Alguma surfista brasileiro que você admira?
Kaleo: Um monte,,, pergunta difícil porque tem muitos... Mario Bracão, Gabriel Medina, Maya Gabeira Muito bons!
M&S: Você recebeu algum contato quando John Frusciante deixou o Red Hot Chili Peppers? O que você achou do novo álbum do Red Hot Chili Peppers?
Kaleo: Red Hot Chili Peppers é uma das minhas bandas favoritas de todos os tempos. John Frusciante é incrível, belo, com um som muito rico em sua guitarra. Eu aprendi muito com sua forma de tocar e seu estilo. Não importa o que aconteça com o Red Hot Chili Peppers eu estarei feliz deles estarem compartilhando o que eles fizerem. E não, eu não recebi o convite para esse trabalho, mas acho que foi porque eles acabaram perdendo o meu número.
M&S: Como foi tocar no final de 2011 com Sublime With Rome no Havaí? A propósito o que você ouviu o ábum deles "Yours Truly"?
Kaleo: Foi divertido tocar com uma banda que você ama escutar, simplesmente incrível estar no Havaí e tocar com eles e com a Iration também ... E, infelizmente não pude escutar o novo álbum pelo fato de estar tão ocupado com Pepper e Sabotage Soundsystem, mas com certeza quando tiver uma chance um dia destes eu escutarei, provavelmente irei amá-lo. Rome é um grande cara e muito talentoso e claro, Eric e Bud são uma potência na seção rítmica da casa.
M&S: Você é fã da banda The Beautiful Girls? Você precisa conferir Kid Mac ... ele já fez uma música com Mat Mchugh da TBG. Kid Mac faz um Indie / Hip-Hop / Eletro muito bom, seria um bom nome para se juntar ao SPLINTA na Law Records...
Kaleo: Amo The Beautiful Girls, Nós viajamos com eles nos Estados Unidos anos atrás, grandes caras e grandes músicos.
M&S: Eu li em uma entrevista que você gosta de "futebol (soccer)", você admira algum jogador do Brasil? Qual seu time?
Kaleo: Sim, sou um grande fã de futebol, eu não chamo de "soccer". E o Brasil tem alguns dos meus favoritos de todos os tempos! No momento o Pato está destruindo e joga no meu time AC Millan.
