The Big
Island of Hawaii will once again host the Kona Surf Film Festival, now in its
8th Year! Running Dec. 2nd and 3rd, 2011 at the beautiful Maunalani Bay Hotel
and Bungalows, the Festival is a great community event that showcases the
newest, most obscure, and most interesting surf films from around the
world. This year the Festival will
benefit the Seathos Foundation, a non-profit group committed to the health of
our oceans, as well as supporting the Surfrider Foundation the Kona to
California Scholarship. In addition to a
great lineup of surf films, the Festival will feature surf art and live music
both nights. Come check it out, send in
your movies, or both!
The Kona
Surf Film Festival is a creation of Kona local Chad Campbell and his friends
& family. Chad, a surfer and filmmaker himself, founded the Festival in
2003 as a means of bringing together Hawaii's surfing family for a communal
love of all things surf. The Festival has always been a forum for
independent local and international filmmakers to showcase their work, and each
year the Fest benefits the surfing community on the Big Island and beyond.
The Fest has raised money for various organizations including Kulana Huli
Honua, the Betty Kanuha Foundation, Protect Kohanaiki Ohana, and the Surfrider
Foundation.
From Shane Dorian and Kelly Slater
mingling casually with the crowd to the rowdy, standing-room only surf party
vibe reminiscent of the early days of surf cinema, the Fest has been an awesome
event for 7 years running. With the past
years as testament to the growing popularity of the Fest, Chad and company are looking forward to
the biggest and best year yet!
