The islands
of Hawaii are not only the biggest influence on IRATION’s sound they are home
to all of its members. IRATION was born from a love of all types of music and a
desire to create something new. Elements of reggae, rock, and pop are mixed
with keyboard/synth and melodic vocal lines to create something truly unique.
IRATION is best heard in a live setting where you can truly experience the full
spectrum of their range. They have proven to truly have an understanding of
modern and traditional performance techniques that keep young and old fans’
hands in the air and heads bobbing.
M&S: How was the experience of recording a song "Generation
Time" with a Jamaican reggae legend Mikey Dread ?
King: I
met Mikey dread by accident. He called me looking for a club he was supposed to
be playing in Santa Barbara. He wanted to cancel his show because the promoter
was not getting back to him. At the time I was also promoting and offered to
promote his show. The show was amazing and he offered to do another one and
also come down to the studio with us. A few months later we found our selfs in the
studio with Mikey dread himself creating some sick music. We were all in a little
shock and disbelief but the experience will be one of my greatest memories I
have ever experienced.
M&S: Since 2007, the career of you guys have been growing so fast in all
the USA. It made happened a invitation to play one of the biggest music festivals
of USA, Lollapalooza. How was it playing
at a festival as big as this?
King: Lollapalooza
was probably the greatest weekend of our careers thus far. It was an honor to
be recognized by C3, one of the biggest promotion companies in the US as well
as South America. We got to experience all three days, see some of our favorite
bands like Cage the Elephant, Foo Fighters, Atmosphere, Flogging Molly, Foster
the People, Friendly Fires and many others. It was a great time in one of our
favorite cities.
M&S: You guys started very young, playing in small jam sessions in
California. As this musical and personal maturity of each member influences in
the lyrics?
King: We started
playing house parties in Isla Vista here in Santa Barbara. Mostly playing
covers of reggae legends like bob, black uhuru, don Carlos and many more. Micah
and Kai are the primary lyric writers. Over the years they have grown into
great writers. They mainly base their lyrics off real life experiences, which I
feel make the songs more relatable to everyone.
M&S: The Sound Iration has an influence and traditional roots, but with a
modern "footprint" using synthesizers and also with many lyrics about
love. How do you define your sound?
King: I'd
describe our sound and alternative/rock/reggae. We don't like to confine
ourselves into one genre, I feel our music can appeal to everyone. Our new
album is really diverse. We have songs like our traditional style and also some
a little more alternative and rock based. It's a true representation o what we
like to listen to.
M&S: You were born in Hawaii and live in California. Besides the music is
the soundtrack for lovers of the surf. How is relation with this sport
and lifestyle?
King: Most of the
guys surf and skate. I think the attitude and life style of both musicians and
extreme sports go hand and hand. Both are laid back and easy going. It's a mind
set.
M&S: Any plans to play in Brazil?
King: We would
love to come to brazil! I actually mixed a Brazilian band, Seu Cuca, most
recent album. They are good guys and putting out some goo music down there. But
I'm sure if not this year then maybe next year we will be heading down there!

nasceu de um amor por todos os tipos de música e de um desejo de criar algo novo. Elementos de reggae, rock e pop são misturados

M&S: Como foi a experiência de gravar a música "Generation Time"
com a Lenda Jamaicana Mikey Dread?
King: Eu encontrei Mikey por acaso. Ele me ligou a procura
de um clube que ele supostamente estava indo
tocar em Santa Barbara. Ele
queria cancelar esse show porque o promoter
não estava dando retorno a ele. No momento eu também estava promovendo e
ofereci promover o show dele. O show foi incrível e ele me ofereceu fazer um
outro e também chegar no estúdio com a gente (Iration). Alguns meses depois nos
nos encontramos no estúdio com Mikey Dread e ele mesmo criou uma musica maneira.
Nos estávamos todos chocados e descrentes mas essa experiência iria ser uma
das minhas maiores lembranças que eu já tinha vivido.
M&S: Desde 2007, a carreira de voces vêm crescendo rapidamente em todos os
USA. Isso fez surgir o convite para tocar num dos maiores festivais de música
dos USA Lollapalooza ano passado. Como foi
tocar num festival tão grande como este?
King: Lollapalooza foi provavelmente o maior final de semana
de nossas carreiras. Foi uma honra ser reconhecido por C3, uma das maiores
"companhias de promoção" nos USA bem como na América do Sul. Nós
vivenciamos todos os 3 dias, vimos algumas de nossas bandas favoritas como Cage
the Elephant, Foo Fighters, Atmosphere, Flooging Molly, Foster the People,
Friendly Fires and muitas outras. Foi um ótimo momento em uma das nossas
cidades favoritas.
M&S: Vocês começaram muito novos,
tocando em pequenas Jam Sessions na California. Como esse amadurecimento
musical e pessoal de cada integrante influencia nas letras da banda?
King: Nós começamos a tocar em festas em casa em Isla Vista
aqui em Santa Barbara. Principalmente tocando covers de Lendas do Reggae como
Bob, Blac Uhuru, Don Carlos and muito mais. Micah e Kai são os compositores primários. Ao longo dos anos eles se tornaram grandes compositores. Eles baseiam suas letras fora principalmente
fora de experiências da vida real, o que eu sinto fazer as músicas ficarem mais
relacionadas com todos.
M&S: O som de vocês tem uma influência bem roots e tradicional, mas com
uma pegada moderna utilizando sintetizadores também e com muitas letras que
falam de amor. Como definem o seu som?
King: Eu descreveria nosso som como alternativo/rock/reggae.
Nás não gostamos de nos limitar dentro de um gênero. Eu sinto que nossa música chegar a todos. Nosso novo álbum (Autonatic) é realmente diversificado. Nós temos cancões como nosso estilo tradicional e também algumas cancões um pouco mais
alternativa e baseadas no rock. É uma verdadeira representação do que nos
gostamos de ouvir.
M&S: Vocês nasceram no Havaí, moram na Califórnia. Além da música que é
trilha sonora para os amantes do surf, como é a relação de vocês com esse
esporte e estilo de vida?
King: A maioria dos caras surfam e andam de skate. Eu acho
que o estilo de vida tanto de músicos como de esportes radicais vão de mão em mão. Ambos sao descontraídos e de fácil convívio. É uma mentalidade.
M&S: Algum plano para tocar no
Brasil?
King: Nós amaríamos ir ao Brasil. Na verdade, eu mixei o álbum mais recente de uma banda brasileira, Seu Cuca. Eles são bons e
apresentaram algumas boas musicas. Mas eu tenho certeza que se não esse ano, então no ano que vem talvez, nós iremos estar indo aí.
